Helsinki City in the Forest

– City for People –
City of Balanced Development
In 1997, Finland entered its 80th year as an independent country. The exhibition “Helsinki / City in the Forest”, which is a part of the Finland-Japan Seminar, is intended to promote greater understanding of the city. An attempt has been made to present in outline the evolution of this city, from its origin to the present day, based on joint research carried out over the course of more than a year by the Helsinki City Planning Department and the Japanese Executive Committee and with the help of information and material offered by the city of Helsinki. Might we not discover in the history of urban formation and development in Helsinki, clues to the solution of many urban problems we face today? Within this city lies hidden the course we must take from the past into the future if we, in a truly democratic way, are to create cities that respect human society and the global environment and truly reflect the lives of its citizens.
